JAMES CITY — Sacred relics of St. Padre Pio were on view last Friday at Saint Bede Catholic Church, one of many sites across the United States this year where parishioners have come to venerate the contemporary saint.
Five first-class relics of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, popularly known as St. Padre Pio, were displayed on a table at St. Bede, Williamsburg, Friday, Oct. 6 for veneration. Over 500 people attended the 9 a.m. opening Mass, and throughout the day, hundreds more stood in line for hours for the chance to venerate them personally and to create third-class relics of their own.
This week, a Tidewater parish is hosting relics of St. Padre Pio, the Capuchin friar canonized in 2002. The items will be on display for one day, Oct. 6, at St. Bede, Williamsburg. The five relics include cloth stained with his blood and a piece of a habit he wore during his time in a monastery in the city of San Giovanni Rotondo in southeastern Italy. They were all provided by the St. Pio Foundation, a non-profit group devoted to the saint’s memory.
Wednesday, October 4 following the 9:00am Mass and coffee, join author and professor, Michèle Spike, in the Father Walsh Room, for a presentation on St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina. Prior to the arrival of the relics of Padre Pio, come to know about the life of one of the most venerated of the modern saints in the Catholic Church.
