Ensembles and Choirs

Bells of Saint Bede

The handbell choir, while primarily composed of adults, is open to students in the 9th grade and upward.  The choir rings our four octaves of Malmark handbells and four octaves of handchimes.  The ringers rehearse on Tuesdays 6:30pm- 8:00pm and play at the Sunday 9:00am Mass every week September through early June.

Cantors are not soloists but singers who proclaim God’s word in song such as the psalm and Gospel acclamations and lead the sung texts when no choir is present.  Cantors should possess a pleasant, clear and accurate voice.  Audition and rehearsals are scheduled individually.

Choral Scholars

This scholarship is available to a degree seeking undergraduate or graduate student dependent upon demonstrable choral training and singing ability and following a successful audition.  Choral Scholars are recruited to sing in the Parish Choir, the Schola Cantorum and to serve as psalmist.

Contemporary Praise Ensemble

This ensemble leads the music at the 5pm Sunday Mass and also provides musical accompaniment for the monthly Wednesday evening Eucharistic Adoration service.  Rehearsals are on Wednesdays 5:30pm- 7:00pm.

Coro la Paz

This choir is part of our Spanish Mass and accompanies all Spanish liturgies from September through June.  Rehearsals are bilingual and on Thursdays from 7:30pm- 8:30pm.

Instrumentalists are used at Masses to enhance the musical song of the Church.  Audition, rehearsals and Masses are scheduled individually.

Parish Choir

This choir includes those from high school age and upward.  The Senior Choristers from the Youth Choir join them on Sundays.  Music sung ranges in style from Gregorian chant to the best of modern choral literature.  The choir sings every other Sunday at the 11am Mass from September to early June.  Rehearsals are Thursdays 6:00pm – 7:30pm.

Schola Cantorum

The Schola Cantorum, an auditioned choir, sings predominantly Latin and English a capella choral music every Sunday at the 9am Mass September through late May.  It requires a good familiarity with reading music and individual confidence in singing a voice part.  Rehearsals are Thursdays 7:30pm – 9:00pm.

Youth Choirs

There are three smaller choirs that make up the large Youth Choir grades 1 through 9.  Those in grades 1 through 3 are Young Choristers; those in Book 1 or 2 are Junior Choristers; those in Book 3 and higher are Senior Choristers.  Rehearsals are Tuesdays 5:00pm – 6:15pm.  The full Youth Choir sings and/or plays every other Sunday at the 11am Mass.  Additionally, the Senior Choristers ring handbells and sing with the Parish Choir on the alternate Sunday 11am Masses.  Based on the Royal School of Church Music model of music education, the Youth Choir sings choral music, plays handbells and choir chimes, and are given Catholic liturgical formation.

Tidewater Intergenerational Orchestra and Band

This ensemble provides an outlet and opportunity for players of all ages to play together and learn from each other.  Rehearsals are clustered around the performance dates with advance distribution of music.  They present frequent concerts and programs in our church and around the community.  For more information, contact the founder and coordinator:  Alice Lindsay at 757-761-5542.

Reaching Out With Music

Since our church was built in 2003, it has been sought out as a place for concerts and recitals because of its very fine acoustical environment and fine pipe organ.  Pay close attention to the parish bulletin and local media for the concerts that are presented here.  We have been very gratified to be able to host the best in good choral and instrumental music and will continue to do so in the future.
