This Week's Bulletin

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 31, 2010

Message from the Pastor

Dear Parishioners of Saint Bede,

I wish to share with you the recent news that our Coordinator of Stewardship, Rosanne Black, has decided to leave her position after three and a half years here at Saint Bede. She has coordinated many of the ministries involved in the Stewardship of our parish and has helped me with the start-up of new ministries. Rosanne’s decision was based on her desire to spend more time with family, and the growth we have experienced in her position precludes this possibility for her.

Rosanne has been an outstanding employee and an ideal liaison between staff, volunteer ministries, and all parishioners. She will be missed by all of us, and we look forward to her ministry with our liturgical celebrations -- a ministry she loves. We thank her for her dedication, loyalty, and tireless efforts on behalf of Saint Bede. Her last day will be Thursday, February 18th.

It is with regret that I inform you that due to a scheduling conflict, it is necessary to cancel the pilgrimage to France and the United Kingdom planned for this summer. I hope this does not cause a conflict for any of you who have expressed an interest in the trip.

Haiti Ministry: This week marks the observance of Haiti Solidarity Week, a diocesan-wide celebration of our commitment to our twin parishes. This year’s theme is Caring for God’s Creation, the Link between Global Solidarity and the Environment. The recent disaster in Haiti stresses just how fragile is the relationship between man and nature, and how vulnerable is man. We are summoned to be caretakers. We are called to action: to eat a little less, to conserve energy, to support sustainable agriculture, and to live with less. We are called to make caring for God’s creation part of our daily actions.

During Lent, Friends for Life will participate in the 40 Days for Life Campaign from February 17th - March 28th. Please watch the bulletin for further information. Also, please pray for the unborn and for their mothers and fathers that they may continue to choose life.

Saint Bede Faithful Citizens: Victory Alert! A Senate subcommittee heard testimony on Senate Bill 188, which would have subjected Pregnancy Resource Centers (PRCs) that do not provide abortions or contraceptives to intrusive regulations, as well as threatening the funding they receive from the sale of "Choose Life" license plates. Members of the subcommittee heard from directors of PRCs, individuals who had sought care from these facilities, the President of the Family Foundation of Virginia, the Executive Director of the Virginia Catholic Conference (VCC), and a representative who expressed the Governor's own opposition to the measure. After witnessing this overwhelming show of support for the centers, the patron of the Senate bill asked that it not move forward for a full committee vote this year - a request which the subcommittee unanimously approved! The House of Delegates subcommittee then rejected the bill by a 4-3 vote. The staff of the VCC wishes to thank you for your opposition to these bills, your support of life-affirming assistance to pregnant women, and your prayerful defense of human life and dignity. Your voice does count

Town Hall Meeting It seems as if Mother Nature had different plans from those of the Around One Table Committee when it came to hosting our first Town Hall Meeting on January 31st! We were looking forward to sharing more information about our building expansion project for a Parish Life & Ministry Center. The good news is that future Town Hall Meetings still are scheduled to take place on February 14th and 28th. Both sessions start at 2 p.m. and will be held in the Commons. The AOT Committee hopes for even bigger crowds now, as this is YOUR chance to become educated and involved in Saint Bede’s future!

Download a copy of the special bulletin insert from January 24th about the Parish Life & Ministry Center, or obtain a hard copy from the Church Office.

A HUGE thanks goes to the bulletin and tax letter “stuffing” angels who made quick work of two daunting tasks. I could not have done it without your help. God bless you!

Parish News

“Year of the Priest”
June 19, 2009 - June 19, 2010
A Prayer for Priests for February:

Most gracious Heavenly Father, we thank You for our faithful priests and bishops, whose spiritual fatherhood and example of fidelity, self-sacrifice, and devotion are so vital to the faith of Your people. May our priests be guided by the examples of Saints Peter and Paul, all the Apostles, and their saintly successors. Give them valiant faith in the face of confusion and conflict, hope in time of trouble and sorrow, and steadfast love for You, for their families, and for all Your people throughout the world. May the light of Your Truth shine through their lives and their good works. Assist all priests, that through Your Grace they may steadily grow in holiness and in knowledge and understanding of Your Truth. May they generously impart this knowledge to those who rely on them. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

All parishioners are invited to join in a Spiritual Bouquet for the priests of Saint Bede Parish. Spiritual Bouquet offerings include Masses, Communions, Rosaries, Eucharistic Adoration, charitable works, etc., all of which are offered to God for our priests. Throughout this Year for Priests, a tally will be kept of all Spiritual Bouquet offerings performed for our priests and at the end of the year, the total number of offerings will be presented to Father Abe and Father Arlon. Forms that provide additional details are located in the Commons on the table under the Divine Mercy painting (across from the kitchen), or you may contact Barbara Anderson, 229-7844 or parishnurse@bedeva.org, for more information. Please ask God's blessings on our priests by joining in this Spiritual Bouquet!

Let us pray for our priests. The Poor Clares of Bethlehem Monastery, 5500 Holly Fork Road, Barhamsville, invite you to a Holy Hour of Prayer for Priests, Thursdays at 5 p.m. and Sundays at 3:40 p.m. The Holy Hour will include Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Vespers, the Rosary, and Benediction. On the third Sunday of the month, fellowship will follow the Holy Hour. Please join the Poor Clares in prayer during this year, designated by Pope Benedict as the Year for Priests. For further information and directions, contact mtstfrancis@megasurf.net or Mary Ann, 565-3486.

For information regarding plenary indulgences for the Year of the Priest, visit catholicnewsagency.com, type in "Plenary Indulgence for Year of the Priest," and scroll down to the article.

Because of the weather last weekend, it was necessary to cancel three of our Masses. Father Arlon had written a letter to parishioners that appeared in Father Abe's column in the bulletin. Since many of you did not have an opportunity to pick up a bulletin and read his message, it is available on our website.

I am pleased to report that parishioners and visitors to Saint Bede have contributed over $100,000 to Haiti through Catholic Relief services! We have been informed also that our twin parish (Saint Joseph in Thomonde) has been overwhelmed with refugees from Port-au-Prince – returning to families there. We have made additional contributions to Thomonde’s relief effort.

STEWARDSHIP COORDINATOR OPPORTUNITY Saint Bede has an opening for an individual who would serve the church by coordinating a stewardship program including stewardship education on time and talent. Candidate would coordinate ministry/volunteer activities and assist with guidance and direction as it relates to particular ministries. Candidate must be able to serve the parish community and effectively work with a diverse group of ministries/volunteers and interact productively with parish staff. View a complete job description. Send resume to vdiloreto@bedeva.org.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

It is with great reluctance that I announce that I have tendered my resignation to Father Abe. The duties of a Stewardship Coordinator have expanded significantly since my acceptance of this position in 2006, and those additional responsibilities, due to the generosity of your time and talent, have impacted my ability to serve your needs adequately when coupled with obligations outside of Saint Bede. Thank you for all that you have shared with me over the last three and a half years - your friendship, your laughter, your sorrows, your prayers, and your generosity of time and talent. It was only through you that I was able to accomplish all that I have as Stewardship Coordinator. I hope that you will continue to offer your time and talent to the new Stewardship Coordinator once that person has been hired. I offer to Father Abe and Ginger DiLoreto my deepest and sincerest thanks for all the assistance and guidance they have provided. To the Saint Bede staff, I offer my thanks for all your support of Stewardship goals and activities. I will continue to volunteer my time through the liturgical ministries. Please know that you remain always in my prayers.

Sincerely,
Rosanne Black
Stewardship Coordinator

The Mass for Families offers an opportunity for children to learn about the various liturgical roles within the Parish including altar server, greeter, lector, usher, and gift bearer. Please encourage your sons and daughters to volunteer For more informaion, contact Tara Neville, 784-3706 or thomasneville@cox.net. The next Mass for Families will be February 21st at 11 a.m.

Please join us for our Parish Lenten Mission which will begin Saturday, February 27th, following the 5:30 p.m. Mass and will conclude with the 9 a.m. Mass, Thursday, March 4th. This year’s mission will be presented by Father Gabriel Pivarnik, O.P. The mission will include daily Mass followed by a presentation as well as an evening presentation. Please see future bulletins for more details as they become available.

Stations of the Cross will be prayed each Friday in Lent at 7 p.m. in the Nave. All are encouraged to attend in preparation for the most sacred celebration of Easter, the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Altar Servers are needed to serve at the Stations of the Cross on Fridays during Lent. A sign-up sheet is located on the ministry table across from the Vesting Sacristy. Friday evenings at Saint Bede provide us with a wonderful opportunity for prayer, almsgiving, and fasting during Lent.

NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE The James City County Fire Department has given notice to Saint Bede that our current parking situation is in violation of the law. The number of cars parking in undesignated or non-existent spaces at our weekly Masses and other events prohibits access by emergency vehicles should an emergency situation arise. As part of our corrective measures, we will add “No Parking – Fire Lane” roadway surface markings and appropriate “No Parking” signage in the areas of concern. Your observance of the law may save a life in the event of an emergency. We advise all parishioners that the intent of the James City County Fire Department is to begin enforcing existing laws. Beyond this, we have no control over how or when James City County chooses to enforce the law. They have the right to ticket and/or tow vehicles violating the law. Therefore, we strongly urge all parishioners to park only in designated parking areas and to use the handicap spaces as appropriate.

Church Tours The next tour of the church building to explain the concepts, desires, and plans that brought the church to its current and clearly unconventional appearance will begin promptly at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 13th, in the Commons. Bring your questions.

Classics at Saint Bede: The Virginia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Matthew Kraemer, will present My Classic Valentine Thursday, February 18th, at 8 p.m. Featured will be passionate serenades from some of the most celebrated operas of our time including Romeo and Juliet, La Boheme, and The Bartered Bride. This will be the last performance in the 2009 - 2010 Classics Season at Saint Bede. Please join us for the Hearts for Healing Teen Talent Night to raise money for Haiti relief efforts. The show will be on Saturday, February 13th, at 7 p.m. in the Commons. Tickets are $5, and all proceeds will go to Catholic Relief Services. Teens will be selling tickets after all weekend Masses, or contact Nicole in the Youth Ministry Office.

Community events now are listed on the Saint Bede website, www.bedeva.org/about/community.htm. Please use the contact information provided in each announcement as Saint Bede does not have any additional details concerning these events.
